About the Artist

Maggie's interest in Art began in childhood.  She cannot remember a time in her life when she wasn't drawing, painting or pursuing some other artistic endeavour.  A few years ago she took a pottery class and was hooked on the first day, clay becoming her passion ever since.

Pickering's approach to clay is fresh and this is apparent in her creative collection of vessels and sculpture.

The feminine form, geometric shapes and sensitivity are all re-occurring elements in her work.  Her vessels are of an architectural nature with strong lines, often treated with a simple painterly application.  They are made one at a time and glazed by hand.

Her figurative sculptures are formal in stature, whimsical in nature and generally have a sense of humor while portraying the many aspects of life from a female perspective.

Predominately using slabs and coils in her work, Maggie also employs throwing and extruding techniques to achieve a desired look.

As well as her work being artistically pleasing, it is important to the artist that her pieces serve as an expression of the personality of their owners.

Maggie has been accepted in many juried shows in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties and is a participant in the thrice yearly
Art in the Park shows in Morro Bay. She also enjoys being part of the Open Studios Tour in the fall.

"Growing up in Scotland, I was part of a family that was rich in humor and this is what I strive to express in the body of my work. Nothing pleases me more than when I observe someone look at my work and a smile crosses his or her face."
