Artist’s Statement

In my work I honor the creatures of the world for their ability to adapt to man-made changes in the environment.  Wildlife may flourish or diminish in response to the action of man.  Prey flourishes without predator; imported species of flora and fauna drive natives to the edge of extinction, food sources and shelter shift, and so on.  Still wild creatures adapt.  The life force in them is strong and drives them to survive.  Unfortunately, their willingness to change is seldom acknowledged.

Because of human intervention, formerly wild animals are now valued companions and workers.  The horse images I use stand as proud examples of this partnership.  The species  that remain wild today continue to adapt to urban and suburban living.  To represent them I use the silhouette of a crow.

Though equilibria are constantly upset, I find a strange beauty in the surprising new balances between the human and animal spheres that arise as humans continue to put their stamp on the world.

I co-opt elements in visual language and motifs created by our industrialized society and introduce them in parallel to stenciled silhouette and graphic forms.  The images I create become, for me, a framework to celebrate animals and the natural world they represent.
